Spiritual Experience vs Spiritual Awakening

Spiritual Awakening

Postby KISS » Mon Mar 16, 2009 1:42 am

I think it's funny when people say they have had Spiritual Awakenings.
I think they are confused. They are actually having Spiritual Experiences.
"THE" Spiritual Awakening happens as a result of the "12" steps.
The 12th step tells us this "Having had A Spiritual Awakening as a result of these steps" Having "A"
Plus in the 12X12 it says we have "THIS" Spiritual Awakening after doing all the steps!

I have Spiritual Experiences throughout my life, throughout recovery, in meetings and while doing the steps.
The Big Book also tells me ""But with the alcoholic, whose hope is the maintenance and growth of a spiritual experience"

Exactly!!
The Spiritual Awakening happens when your have completed the steps.
The Spiritual Experiences happen over and over.

Thank you for posting this.. it bugs me when I here people in meetings saying they are having Spiritual Awakeningssssssssssss.

It's like people saying they don't crave alcohol no more :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
You only crave alcohol after you take the 1st sip/drink.

I agree.

Its interesting as I was just re-reading the piece on Spiritual Expeiences in the back of the big book yesterday. They seem to use the words interchangably to describe a personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism.

For me I recognize that I've had spiritual experiences throughout my life. I use to call them "God moments". I like God consciousness better. Now in my sobriety, I probably pay more attention to these moments/incidences and usually end the thought with a prayer of thanks.

Although I sometimes feel frusterated or impatient about my progress towards a full spiritual awakening, when I take the time to look back 1 month, 2 months, etc. I do feel I've made "progress" in this regard.
