Trouble with step 3

Step 3: Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Trouble with step 3

Postby sickandtired » Tue Mar 17, 2009 11:00 pm

I have just joined AA and have gone to 2 meetings.I know that i am alcoholic and have known for a very long time.I'm very enthusiastic about the program and have started working the steps.I asked a member to be my sponsor last night and he agreed to be a temporary sponsor as he has just been sober for a short while. The first two steps were fairly easy to accomplish as I new I was an alcoholic and new that I needed a power greater than me to help me because I had tried myself and failed many times. However i seem to be stuck on step 3 and i don't know why I believe in God and truly want what others have found in AA.I have gotten down and my knees and prayed for this step but i just feel that it hasn't been done yet.Should i continue on or what any help. Thanks sick and tired.

Hey sickandtired I know what you mean.
I used to always say and think I was "stuck" on Step 3.
I think know I was always complicating this step.

In the big book it says just after step 2, basically the way we have been living, or doing things "self-will run riot" wasn't working.
And if we are convinced it says.. then we are at Step 3.

But I was told Step 3 is simple.
By taking Step 3....
I made a decision to not drink, made a decision to go to meetings, made a decision to move forward into the steps and continue in the journey of recovery.

Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

Yes I agree. I was told our will & our lives was.
Our Will (my thinking) Our Lives (give my life to AA meetings.. because that is what the God of my understanding would want)
The quickest way to get on your feet ....... is ..
....... to get on your knees.

I like that.
I know I need to go to allot of meetings (meetings / = life)
And when I go to meetings and talk to other alcoholics that means my (thinking / = will) is changing.

I don't ever want to change that decision that "I have made".
If I drink or stop going to meetings I have taken that decision back.

I am glad I have made a decision to turn my will & my life over ..
